Obituary

Alan Wayne Freiberger, was born on July 27, 1949- the third of five sons of Pete and Jean Freiberger.  He was welcomed home by older brothers Richard (Dick) and Robert (Bob).  James (Jim) and Gary were later added to this rambunctious group of boys.  Alan attended school in Vilas, where he spent lots of hours drawing cartoons of cowboys in class.  Alan loved art and was great at it.  He enjoyed playing basketball and baseball, but was never very fond of track.  Alan was always a friend to others, and would never hesitate to share anything with anyone that was in need...much of how he lived his entire life.  In Junior High, Alan bought an old pickup and painted it in the school shop.  A talent that he continued to use throughout his life as he painted many vehicles, trucks and tractors. Through his high school years, he worked for the Jap & Alice Brown Family.  Alan proudly graduated high school in 1967

Alan's love of drawing lasted throughout his life - anytime Alan had a pen or pencil in his hands, and extra time, he would doodle.  Whether drawing cartoon caricatures, nature or people, he was always expressing his talents on paper.  Through his love of drawing, he also had a love for painting.  The Rutherford family once built a calf carrier for the back of their pickup.  Alan was asked to paint a calf on the carrier.  Darrell says he remembers that the painted calf looked so real, that their young dogs would just bark and bark at that painted calf!  He even enjoyed painting tractors during the farm strike days.  Charlie Meastas was a lucky person to own a tractor that Alan painted.  He even had the opportunity to paint the Meastas' derby car once, adorning it with a devil on the top!

Alan was drafted into the Army and reported for basic training in San Antonio, April of 1969 - He was ordered to Vietnam, but since his older brother Dick was already in the field in Vietnam, Alan was ordered to Germany where he trained to be a medic but ended up in the motor pool - as a mechanic.  He loved traveling in Germany.  When others were bar hopping, Alan and a friend would rent fancy cars and travel around.  They would even take day long bike rides throughout the countryside, just sightseeing.  Drinking a lot of warm beer and eating bread and cheese are the things he remembers most when talking to his boys about his time in the Army.  Alan was honorably discharged in January of 1971.

A chance teaching position in Walsh brought the love of his life, all the way from Boulder Colorado in 1971.   Alan met and fell in love with Vanda Carlson in 1972, and they were married August 15, 1975.  Vanda brought into Alan's life, her young son, Chris.  Added to this union was Johnathan Alan, born in 1977, followed by Jeremiah Lee in 1986.

He always dreamed of having a truck to make a living.  He first bought a bob tail truck that he hauled many silage loads in the 80's during off season.  Alan farmed from the time  he was out of the Army side by side with his dad, up through this summer, with help from Jeremiah getting equipment prepped for him. Fall harvest 2020 was his last trucking venture.  Somewhere around 1982-83 he bought his first semi - which he leased monthly under Temple & Esgar, hauling grain.  He then stepped up his game, buying his green Peterbilt from Rocky Crane around 1986 - which was a dream come true.  With his dad, brother Jim, and family friend - Jerry Fruth - thus began 4F Farms, a trucking company hauling grain until 1995; when he began hauling livestock.  His first cattle trailer was purchased in the spring of 95 - completing his life long dream.  Alan commercially quit hauling in 2002, but still hauled during harvest time for Challenger Farms and Then finally for Rose Farms.

Alan and Vanda purchased their first home - a beautiful modular home - in 1983.  This is the home Alan lived in up until his death.  I think we all remember when that home came rolling in.  What a glorious chapter in their life!

Alan and Vanda's first grandchild, Shelby was born in November 1989.  Both grandma and grandpa were as pleased as could be with her birth.  Unfortunately, Vanda left her time on this Earth way too early for all of us, the following November, 1990.

Alan's home was never short of quiet when grandchildren were around.  For his oldest son, Chris, brought two more granddaughters into the family - Vanda in 1994 and Kassidy in 2000.

John married Dacia Montgomery in March of 98 adding Mikayla in 2000 and Jacob in 2001;  John then married Heidi Eivins in April 2009 bringing to the family Hoyt in 2011; Easton in 2012; and Aspen in 2019.  Jeremiah married Lisa Dodge in July 2010 and to their union, came Jentry in  2010

He loved all of his grandchildren, and he was even able to spend two days in the hospital with Jeremiah and Lisa during and following the birth of Jentry.  He left the hospital the morning after she was born, and went straight to a gun shop to purchase what every newborn needs - a pink 22 rifle.

Alan was fortunate to meet Sue Gillet in 1992, and begin a lifelong friendship with her.  They dated some, but always remained close friends until his final moments.

Alan had many hobbies throughout his life - Bob remembers his love for cutting firewood.  Alan would love to go to the cedars and cut a pickup load of firewood - even delivering a load to Bob while they were living in Denver!  One of his most favorite hobbies would have to have been riding motorcycles. Summer of 97 brought a love of riding.  Kenton Dykes helped buy him a 750 Kawasaki.  He enjoyed riding with his brothers Dick & Jim and Kenton where they would spend time on the weekends traveling around to motorcycle rides and rallies all around the area.  1999 Alan bought Dick's Virago when Dick upgraded to his Harley. Then in 2000, when his brother Dick passed away, Alan purchased his Harley, selling the Virago to his little brother Gary.  2018 he finally upgraded to a HD Trike - the Red Rhino - so he could continue riding when he could no longer physically keep his 2 wheeler up.  These brothers and friends rode many of miles together - making memories to last a lifetime.  During the summers, it was quite frequent that Alan would take off after church with Jeremiah, Lisa and Jentry and head to Ulysses to eat his favorite "China-men" food.  Or even a quick, last minute trip to Dumas for Chinese food.

One of Alan's greatest honors was to take care of his older brother Dick that battled cancer.  Alan was able to take him to doctor appointments and treatments and was able to comfort him in his final moments. Alan entered the gates of heaven on December 17th 2020 with John and Jeremiah by his side.  He was welcomed into his eternal life by his wife Vanda Freiberger, Parents Pete and Jean Freighberger, Brothers Richard (Dick) and Gary Freiberger, Father in Law Carrol Carlson, and other family and friends.  Alan leaves behind to mourn his passing - Son Chris Freiberger of Walsh, John and Heidi Freiberger of Two Buttes, and Jerry & Lisa Freiberger of Springfield; Brothers Bob & Arla Freiberger of Grove Oklahoma and Jim & Mari Lee Freiberger of Vilas; Brother in Law Dave & Janay Carlson of Boulder, and mother in law Vivian Carlson of Boulder; Grandchildren - Shelby (Casey) Painter, Vanda (Ben) Gutierrez, Kassidy Freiberger, Mikayla (Derick) Oxley, Jacob, Hoyt, Easton, Jentry and Aspen Freiberger; Great grandchildren Aleah, Colter and Ryder Painter, Bryson and Paisyn Gutierrez, and Baby Oxley on the way.   Numerous nieces and nephews and a slew of family and friends that cherished their time knowing Alan.
