Obituary for Roscoe Hargrove
Albert Roscoe Hargrove was born on June 4, 1927 to Albert Ross and Hattie Mae Hargrove in Eva, Oklahoma. The family lived in the Elkhart, Kansas area until 1940 when they moved to Walsh, Colorado to farm. He graduated from Walsh High School in 1945, then joined the Maritime Service where he served 2 years in the Philippines and Japan.
After returning from Japan he worked in the grocery store in Walsh as a butcher. On December 12, 1948 he married Radine Cogburn in Colorado Springs, Colorado. Following their marriage they made their home in Walsh where Roscoe worked at the Service Station selling parts. The family also lived in California for a while as he worked at Lockheed Aircraft in Burbank, California. When they returned to Walsh, Roscoe went back to the Service Station. He began farming in 1965 and continued this for the next 5 years. In November 1970 Roscoe was elected Baca County Tax Assessor. He held that position until 1995 when he retired. Roscoe continued to do consulting work for assessors around the state for several years following his retirement.
Roscoe was always generous with his time for his friends and his community. He served on numerous committees and boards at the local and state level. Some of these included the Walsh Health-Care Board for 7 years, the Walsh Sr. Citizen Board for 12 years, and the Peoples Credit Union for 7 years. He was actively involved with his church boards as well serving numerous years as a deacon and a trustee. During his time as county assessor and after his retirement, Roscoe held positions at the state level including President of the Colorado Assessors Association.
Roscoe always enjoyed watching and attending racing events. He built and raced stock cars and go carts for a number of years. He especially loved to watch Indy car races, and was privileged to attend the Indianapolis 500 a few times in his life.
He also had a great passion for the Denver Broncos and John Elway. He treasured his Broncos season tickets and made sure each grandchild got to go to a game. He kept those tickets even after he was unable to attend himself. He'd been waiting all summer for the season to begin.
Roscoe had the ability to 'repair' many things from car engines to plumbing and found enjoyment in doing so. He spent many hours tinkering in the garage. All his children and grandchildren often called for his help and advice on various home projects. Even after his eyesight failed him, he could be found in the middle of the work supervising and directing.
Roscoe accepted Jesus as his personal savior at a revival at the Methodist Church in 1954. He served his Lord in many ways and was a shining example to others for the rest of his life. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. His family knew they could always count on him to be there for them no matter what happened. He loved spending time with his family and they all knew how loved they were. He will be missed tremendously.
He was preceded in death by his parents Albert and Hattie Mae; 2 brothers, Pat and Dale; and 3 sisters, Opal, Etha Mae and Gertie.
He will be greatly missed by his loving wife, Radine, of their home; his sons, Richard and wife Brenda, of Walsh; Tim and wife Stephanie, of Las Cruces, New Mexico; his daughters, Laurel and husband Craig Woolley of Fritch, Texas; and Gayla of Amarillo, Texas. His grandchildren and great-grandchildren; Monica, Alan, and Shelby Sower of Wolfforth, Texas; Kyla, Cory, Kaden, and Colter Lynch of Panhandle, Texas; Kory, Stephanie, Cooper, and Rylyn Woolley of Highlands Ranch, Colorado; Jason Hargrove of Denver, Colorado; Chelsea, Blake, Maddox, and Hudson Gourley of Springfield, Colorado; Tanner and Jet Hargrove of Pasadena, California; Logan Hargrove of Colorado Springs, Colorado and Molly Hargrove of Odessa, Texas; sister Rosalie Hume and husband Lloyd of Manter, Kansas and many nieces, nephews and friends.
Roscoe will be remembered and greatly missed by his family and many friends.
