IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Arthur "Shorty"
J. Miller
July 16, 1924 – January 9, 2020
Arthur J. (Shorty) Miller was born August 16, 1924 in Lamar, CO to Arthur L. and Eva Miller and left his earthly home on January 9, 2020 to join his beloved wife, and many cherished family members and friends in heaven. Shorty was 1 of 12 children and grew up in the Stonington/Walsh area where he attended the Walsh School system. He decided in the 8 th grade to quit school because the teacher insisted the boys were going to learn Spanish just as well as the girls and he was determined not to do that. His father told him to choose school or work, so he indeed chose to leave the family farm at the age of 14, and to go live and work with the Hume Family. Shorty spent a brief time living in Portland, OR with his sister Stella, but he was never happy anywhere but in the Walsh area and always wanted to return home. When asked why he never wanted to live anywhere else, he always replied, "it's all I've ever known and all I ever want to know".
Shorty joined the Navy during WWII and served from 1943-1946 on the USS California Battleship. He was proud to serve his country and often spoke of his years in the Navy and the experience of losing 63 boys when a Japanese suicide diver hit the ship. He shared that at the height of the war, he and his fellow shipmates never touched their feet on solid ground for 13 months. He developed lifelong friends while in the Navy and enjoyed traveling to his ship reunions as often as possible.
Shorty met his wife, Jean Hughes (deceased), when she accompanied her brother with his harvest crew to the Walsh area. She saw Shorty at the water well and gave him a wolf whistle. They were married 11/12/1947 and were blessed with two daughters Linda Gruber (deceased) and Connie Connolly (Paul) of Bishop, CA. He is survived by 3 grandchildren that he loved immensely, Lori Silverstrand of Lincoln, NE; Gena Krantz (Richard) of Highlands Ranch, CO and Joey Gruber(Tomeka) of Lacey, WA; 10 great grandchildren and 3 great- great grandchildren. He is also survived by 1 brother, Bill Miller of Walsh, CO and 1 sister, Pinky Thomas of Longview, Tx.
Shorty worked the majority of his career with the Walsh Propane Service and later farmed with Olen Hardy. He always considered Olen to be one of his closest friends. After Olen's passing he continued to farm with Artie Cogburn, whom he considered as a nephew. He enjoyed farming and especially loved driving the 18-wheelers. In his last few months of life, he would often say, "I wished I was trucking again". Nothing brought him more pleasure than driving and in his later years, after his wife Jean's passing, he was fortunate to reconnect with his old teenage love, Lomae Sharpe George and they spent many happy hours together playing games and traveling. Shorty was an avid, dedicated fan of the Rockies and Broncos and was fortunate to have attended several games.
Shorty accepted the Lord during the Larry Jones Crusade more than 40 years ago and was undoubtedly met at the Gates of Heaven by his family and friends that have gone before him. He was indeed a wonderful son, husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle and friend and will be greatly missed and always remembered by all who loved and truly knew him.
