Obituary

Pittsburg KS: Betty Jane Tincombe (Schweizer) Rich, age 88, of Columbus, KS, died Saturday, May 9, 2015.

Betty was born October 11, 1927 to the Tincombe family, and was later adopted by Fred Schweizer and Edna Grant. They moved to Baca County, Colorado in 1932. They lived on the farm in Boston Community. As a child on the farm she helped her mother with the household chores. She helped her father raise Broom Corn. They lived in a two room house with a coal stove to cook on and heat the house. They had no running water or electricity. She attended Vilas Grade School and some high school. While attending high school, she met Donald Rich at a wedding at their local church on May 20, 1949. She married Don on October 23, 1949. To this union was born one daughter and one son. They move d to Kansas. He held several jobs before settling on a OA White and Sons for 22 years in Lakin, Kansas. While in Lakin their son grew up and attended the local schools. In the early part of their marriage, while their son was in school she took care of friends, family, and members of the community. She was involved in church and the local community. While at OA White and Sons Ranch she spent her spare time helping Don Rich with the animals and farm work for 22 years. After leaving the farm Don held several jobs and Betty worked with him part-time as well as working in rest homes. Don and Betty took their son and moved to Elkhart, Kansas. Don worked part-time with his brother as a mechanic and oil roustabout. Betty helped in the shop working with her in-laws and answering the phones as needed. After losing Don, September 23, 1983, Betty decided to try to fulfill their dream of building a genealogical society in Yates Center, KS. After moving to Yates Center, KS Betty saw her son divorced and later remarried. She renewed ties with a family friend and went with him on a variety of trips. Her oldest grandson was born in 1986. Her youngest grandson was born in 1993. She moved to Columbus, KIS to spend time with her son, daughter-in-law, and grandsons until her death.

She was preceded in death by her husband Donald in 1983, daughter Elisabeth in 1950, her mother Blanche in 1954, sister Vera in 1999, father Lesley in 1978, adopted mother Edna in 1954, adopted father Fred H. in 1967, 5 sisters-in-law, and 5 brothers-in-law.

She is survived by her son Donald and wife Judy A., grandsons Taylor and Walter, brother-in-law Willis Rich and wife Donna, Sue Harrsh, Nadine Rich, Viola, A host of nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.
