IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Darrel Wayne
Utt
April 23, 1943 – March 6, 2021
Darrel Wayne Utt was born on April 23, 1943, in Lamar, Colorado to Darrel and Dorothy Utt of Walsh, Colorado. He spent the first 3 years of his life with his mom and grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. John George of Walsh while his dad was in the Army serving overseas. In 1946 his dad and mom bought a farm south of Walsh and they moved there. Darrel Wayne resided there and went to school in Campo, Colorado through 5 th grade then went to Vilas School for 6 th grade and some of 7 th grade. The family then moved to Amarillo, Texas for the rest of his 7 th grade year. The family then moved back to Campo where he finished his sophomore year.
He held various jobs until August 1964, at which time he entered the U.S. Navy. From August 1964, until August of 1967, he was stationed in the U.S. The remaining months of 1967 until September of 1968, he was in the Philippine Islands. He assembled nuclear bombs. In September of 1968 he was honorably discharged from the Navy.
After his discharge he worked at Redi-Mix Concrete Company out of Gruver, Texas. In April of 1969, he started driving truck over the road.
Darrel Wayne and Alice Jenkins got married on October 26, 1978 in Keyes, Oklahoma. They had 2 daughters, Brook born March 30, 1981 and Marsha born September 27, 1983. The family resided in Campo until June 1968, then moved to Byers, Colorado. At this time, he also took and received his GED. He was told he couldn't take the test in one day and he had to study first. He told them he didn't have time to study; he wanted to take it that day. Darrel Wayne said he was old enough to be everyone's grandpa in the classroom LOL! But he took the test and guess what: results were-- he was the first one finished, had the highest score of the class and all without studying LOL! He had to have his GED to accept his job at Nations Way Transportation. He worked for this company from 1986 until 1999. In 1999 Nations Way went out of business so he started working at Rocky Mountain Arsenal until 2004. In January of 2004 he went back to driving over the road for Major Transportation. In January of 2007, he started driving for DisTech tanker trucks over the road. Darrel Wayne drove as many miles as it would take to get to the moon and back 3 or 4 times! In late January of 2008, Darrel Wayne had to stop driving truck due to diabetes.
March 30, 2008, Darrel Wayne moved back to Campo. He still couldn't retire completely so he enjoyed working for Brent, Curtis, Vance, Rafe and Austin farming, cutting wheat and corn, etc. Darrel Wayne and Alice really enjoyed going to Monte Vista during barley harvest with D'Lynn and Georgia Turner during the 2012, 2013 and 2014 harvest seasons. When the girls were little they got to go along and they enjoyed that time as well. The only bad thing about Monte Vista is that's where Darrel Wayne lost and left his thumb in a sheep pen.
In 2011, he bought his parents' home in Vilas. He would joke around and say the house was too big until the girls and grandkids were all there LOL, then most of the time it wasn't big enough.
There are 6 grandchildren; Alan Brewer 13, Shayne Utt 9, Dilan Brewer 9, Tyler Johnson 8, Trinity Johnson 7, and MaKayla Dickerson 19 months. Grandpa enjoyed taking the kids for rides on the combine, seeing how dirty he could get their faces with chocolate, ice cream or anything messy and teaching them to say "big sum bitch and oh shit LOL! Definitely eating Cheetos with all the kids was a good time but it was a daily thing for him and his sweet, little MaKayla!
Darrel Wayne enjoyed going to the coffee shop to visit with the guys but mainly to harass the waitresses, waiters, and the boss.
Darrel Wayne has always loved his country music and dancing! He has driven many miles to listen to music and he was only 2 weeks away from going to Brady, Texas where he and Alice have gone for the last several years to Heart of Texas County Music Festival that lasts for 10 days.
His survivors are his wife, Alice of Vilas; daughters, Brook Brewer of Vilas and Marsha Utt of Campo; 4 grandsons and 2 granddaughters; sisters, Beverly (Vance) Alfrey of Vilas, Karen (Tim) Courkamp of Lamar and Brenda (Tim) King of Amarillo, Texas. Also surviving are several nieces, nephews, cousins, aunts, uncles and many, many friends.
He is preceded in death by his maternal grandparents, John and Virginia George, paternal grandparents, Walter and Gertrude Utt and his parents, Darrel and Dorothy Utt.
