DONALD L. GIBSON
1930-2012
Donald Lee Gibson, 81, passed away June 10, 2012 at Southeast Colorado 10th Street Cottage, where he had been a resident for two weeks.
Donald was the fifth of eleven children born to Fred and Mary Gibson of Springfield.
He met local Edler girl Donna Neal and they were married December 26, 1953. To this union three daughters were born, Cheryl, Carlene and Penny.
He served in the U.S. Navy on the hospital ship USS Haven from 1950 to 1954. He returned back home and started his newspaper printing career employed by Melvin Stults at the Plainsman Herald in March 1955. This career spanned 56 years, 38 for Mr. Stults and when his daughter Penny and husband Joe bought the paper in 1993 he continued to work there until retiring in January 2011. If you ever had any commercial printing from the Plainsman, he was the man to do it.
Donald enjoyed years of playing town team basketball, softball, bowling and a little bit of golf. Some of his fondest memories were fishing at Two Buttes Lake and in the mountains with family, brother in law J.T. Taff, and brother Gene and family. He also enjoyed ping pong matches with his brothers, nephew Randy Shaw and niece Dee Ownbey and husband, Scruff.
He was preceded in death by his infant daughter, Carlene; parents; brothers, Gene, Wayne and Kenneth.
Donald is survived by his wife, Donna of 58 years; daughters, Cheryl Bridge Pueblo West, Penny (Joe) Self, Springfield; sisters: Margaret Wade, Iris Taff, Shirley Greenlee, all of Springfield; Ines Brisendine, Pittsburg, KS; Charlene (Tex) Shaw, Selden, KS. Brothers, Bob (Marilyn) Gibson and Larry Gibson, Springfield. Grandchildren: Brandy (Chris) Hutto, New Castle, CO; Sommer (Steve) Street, Pueblo West; Austin (Jamie) Self, Fort Collins; Albany (John) Luna, Fort Collins. Great grandchildren include: Cirstye Schaller, Garden City, KS; Colby Schaller, Denver; Jet and Nash Hutto, New Castle; Steven Street III, Pueblo West and Cashous and Lillyauna Luna, Fort Collins.
He is also survived by numerous nieces, nephews and many friends.
