Obituary

Dorothy Mahala Mahan was born October 3, 1928, in Neosho, Missouri, to Lawrence Franklin Mahan and Lulu Belle Mahan.

Dorothy grew up in southwest Missouri, graduating from Seneca High School. She worked as a telephone operator and was active in her women's group at Seneca Baptist Church.

In the late 1940's, Dorothy's aunt Pearl Ball, who was in Baca County cooking for broomcorn hands, told Bob Forinash about her pretty niece back in Seneca. Bob made special trip to meet Dorothy, meeting her on his 23rd birthday (February 24, 1948), and after knowing each other less than 4 months, they were married in Seneca on June 12, 1948. After they were married, they resided in Baca County.

For at least the first year of their marriage, they lived without electricity or running water. Dorothy did not know how to cook when she married Bob, but between Bob and Aunt Pearl they got her well on her way and she cooked for many broomcorn hands and lots of family gatherings in their early years of marriage.

Within 5 years of their marriage, they were able to buy a farm southeast of Walsh on which they raised four children; Delbert Victor, Emma Jane, Allen Douglas and Timothy Wayne. Bob and Dorothy also had occasion to help other family members through the years and there were several times in which children from different families came to stay for extended periods.

Dorothy was an avid reader and loved to play games and work crossword and Sudoku puzzles.

Bob and Dorothy lived on their farm until 1988 when they moved to Walsh. They resided at their home in Walsh until June 2013 at which time they moved to the Walsh Healthcare Center.

Dorothy passed away at the Walsh Healthcare Center on January 1, 2015. She was preceded in death by her husband Bob, two sons, Timothy Wayne and Allen Douglas, a sister Norma Jean Miksell and a brother Bythel Mahan. She is survived by her son Delbert and daughter Janie, numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren, one great great-grandchild and many nieces and nephews.

Dorothy was a strong, quiet, kind and gracious woman who was loved by all who knew her and will be greatly missed by family and friends.
