Obituary

Emmett Darrell Henderson, of Walsh, Colorado, passed away December 17, 2015, at the Stanton county Hospital in Johnson, Kansas. He was 84.

Emmett was born January 20, 1931, in Sayre, Oklahoma, to David Elbert Henderson and Sybil Stotts Henderson. The Henderson household was a rambunctious one as Emmett was one of six boys; his brothers included James, Cloyce, Ronald and Pete Henderson and Gary Mathies.

Emmett attended school in Stonington, Colorado. At a young age he worked for Chesley Cogburn and then followed the pipeline for several years. Upon his return to Walsh he worked for Olen Hardy at the Texaco Station and Walsh Propane and finally retired after 17 years of service as manager of the Walsh Co-op. During his working years Emmett received numerous state and local awards.

Emmett married Wynema Rutherford on June 12, 1952, in Clayton, New Mexico. To this happy union 7 children were born; Darrell, Doris, Loy, Dale, David, Rex and Kellie.

Emmett was drafted into the United States Army in February of 1952 and was honorably discharged in November of 1953. He served his country with pride and distinction earning a Purple Heart and Distinguished Service Medal.

Emmett cherished time spent with his kids and his grandkids. His family was his favorite hobby and another enjoyable past time was visiting with friends at the coffee shop. He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Walsh.

Emmett is survived by his wife of over 63 years, Wynema; children, Darrell (Gale) of Satanta, Kansas, Loy (Marsha) of Ulysses, Kansas, Dave (Lori) of Canyon, Texas, Rex (Trish) of Amarillo, Texas and Kellie (Bruce) Walters, of Satanta, Kansas and thirteen grandchildren, and sixteen great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his brothers and their wives, Cloyce and Jan of Ellicott, Colorado, Pete and Sharon of Amarillo, Gary and Betty Mathies of Amarillo; sisters-in-law, Sandra Henderson of Amarillo, and Jimmie Minzer and husband, Lee of Ellicott and brother-in-law, Bill Dillon of Walsh. Numerous nieces, nephews and friends also survive.

He is predeceased by his parents; step-father, Warner Mathies; daughter, Doris Jean; son, Dale Lynn and two brothers, James and Ronald.

A graveside funeral service was held Monday, December 21, at 10:00 A.M. in the Stonington Cemetery with Cecil Burhenn officiating.
