La Glenda Belle Robins Clayton was born at home September 8, 1916, at 5:00 pm to Robert Henry and Lottie E. Robins in Stonington, Colorado. She went home to be with her Lord, Tuesday January 16, 2018, at the age of 101 years, 4 months and 8 days.
Mom's birth was not recorded until December 17, 1916, as no doctor was present at the birth. She was born three months after her parents and siblings traveled to Baca County via covered wagon from Oklahoma. Her brother Gene said he ran all the way to Colorado from Oklahoma as there was no room in the covered wagon for him to ride. They moved into a dugout while waiting for a house to be built. One sister, Wilma (Bill) was born four years later. Mom and her sister walked to school, uphill both ways, as her brothers rode the horse. According to her father, it was not proper or ladylike for girls to ride a horse.
After the death of her father, Mom, Wilma (Bill) and their mother moved to Walsh from Stonington. She completed her education and graduated from Walsh High School May 23, 1935. The graduation ceremony was held in the basement of the Friends Church, located across the street from the school. The graduation ceremony could not be held in the school gymnasium as it was used as a hospital during the Dust Bowl of the 1930's. All three of her children attended school in Walsh and graduated from Walsh High School.
After graduation, Mom began working as wait staff and cook at Uncle Bernie Dapron's Café in Walsh where she was paid $1.00 per week. In the early 60's Mom began working for Lucy Bishop at the Get and Go Café as a cook and baker. She ended her working career at the Walsh Hospital in the dietary department as a cook and baker.
Mom met and married James Clayton September 12, 1944; they later divorced. To this union were born three children; Raymond in 1946, Janie in 1949 and Richard in 1952.
She raised her children as a single parent at 125 Indiana in Walsh.
Mom lived in Baca County all her life with the exception of one year in the San Luis Valley with three of her brothers; Frank, Gene and Claude. After one year, she became ill as result of being homesick for Baca County and the wide open spaces.
She is survived by her three children and their spouses; Raymond and Shari Clayton, Cheyenne Wells, Colorado, Janie (favorite daughter) and Charles Hook, Greeley, Colorado, Richard and Roberta Clayton, Rocky Ford, Colorado; grandchildren; Kim Spelts, Mark Clayton, Meaghan and Brian Schiller, Kristen and Kevin Simpson, Tom and Krystal Butacan, Marie and Erik Fritzler and Norma and Ron Oster. She also leaves behind 14 great grandchildren. Mom also leaves nephews nieces, friends, church members and many memories.
Mom was loved and cared for by the staff at Walsh Healthcare Center from the day that she entered Maplewood Assisted Living and then transferred to the Healthcare Center. The following is for the staff at the WHCC: Be aware, make certain that your shirt is pulled down in the back or you may hear "WOO HOO" and feel a tug. Thank you for loving and caring for Mom all these years.
