Obituary

Gregory Keith Gowin was born January 7, 1947, at Fitzsimmons Army Hospital in Denver, Colorado, to Orville Lee Gowin and Norma Lee White Gowin; where, by the way, his granddaughter was also born. At the time of Greg's birth, Orville was stationed at Buckley Field and they were living in Aurora.

When Greg was two years old, the Gowin Family moved to Walsh, Colorado, where they were engaged in farming with Norma's father, Everett White, who lived in Cheney, Kansas. By the time they moved to Walsh they were a family of five – the three children were Terry, Greg and Becky. Soon after the move to Walsh, another girl Patricia, joined the family but was to only survive a month.

Greg began his school days staying with Walter Doner's family while his parents were taking care of his baby sister. The Konantz School, 11 miles east of Walsh, was his education home until junior high when they moved to town so the children could take advantage of all the education the school had to offer without all the miles on the road. Greg graduated with the Walsh High School class of 1965 and went on to Northeastern Junior College where his met his future wife, Vicky Chartier. Square dancing brought them together – Vicky was new to the dance but Greg had grown up dancing. After transferring to Colorado State University to finish his degree, Greg became a member of the Aggie Haylofters Square Dance Exhibition Team.

Greg and Vicky were married in June of 1969. Their first two summers of marriage were spent on the family farm east of Walsh teaching Vicky how to be a country girl. After graduation from CSU in late winter of 1971, Greg began teaching Vocational Agriculture (FFA) in Campo. In 1972 he received the Honorary Chapter Farmer Award voted on by the students. In 1974, while still at Campo, Greg was the assistant baseball coach to Gary Hartley when Campo won the State Baseball Championship against Simla. During this time he also started refereeing high school volleyball and continued this vocation for the next couple of decades. Greg then taught at a consolidated school east of Denver, Arickaree. While there, he was elected as an officer to the Colorado State Vocational Agriculture Association and served a four year term ending as President in 1979.

During their time at Arickaree, his two children arrived, Jeffrey in 1975 and Jessica in 1977. In June of that year they moved back to Walsh where he continued to teach VoAg. He ended his teaching career at Vilas High School in 1983 as the Shop Teacher/Bus Driver.

Greg spent the next three decades in Baca County involved in his community. He took on many roles including Holt Manors manager, Volunteer Fireman (Chief from 1986-2000), Walsh United Methodist Church Lay Leader for over 25 years, Certified EMT leader & Member of the Ambulance Service, Deputy Coroner, 4-H leader/project judge, City Market Employee, Construction guru for himself and others, Science Fair Judge, Member and Current President of the Southeast Camp of the Gideon's and 9 years as a dispatcher/deputy with the Baca County Sheriff's Department before retiring.

Preceding him in death were his parents Orville and Norma Gowin, his in-laws Richard and Neoma Chartier, his sister-in-law Bunny Chartier, his sister Patricia, and niece Sarah.

Those left to mourn his passing are his wife of 46 years, Vicky, his son Jeffrey (Alana) Gowin of Thornton, Colorado, son, Nathan Ramirez of the home, his daughter Jessica Gowin and friend Chantz Villers of Walsh, granddaughter Tenley May, brother Terry (Holly) Gowin of Aurora, Colorado, sister Becky (Ed) Tommack of Boise, Idaho, brother-in-law Walter Chartier of Fort Lupton, Colorado, and numerous nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews.
