James F. Canfield (Jim) was born in Tempe, Arizona, October 7, 1936 to James Frank Faulkner and Helen Dunsworth Lee Faulkner. When Jim was 18 months old his father was killed in an accident. His mother married Ed Canfield sometime later. Times were hard and the family went to the state of Washington to pick apples. They found more work in Sacramento, California, on their way back to Arizona and settled there. When Jim was 9 years old, he made the decision to be adopted and took the name of Canfield. Although Jim did not have any siblings, his many cousins filled this vacancy.
Jim enjoyed growing up in Garden Acres in Sacramento. He played some sports in junior high. He graduated from Grant High School in 1955 with a class of 450 students. His school was an important part of his life and he proudly wore shirts and cap for the Pacers.
After high school, Jim married Viola Dudley. One son, Randy, was born to this marriage which ended four years later. During this time Jim became manager of two Dry Creek Lumber Companies. It was at this time that he started bowling, a recreation he enjoyed for many years.
In 1961 he married Alta (McConnell) Henderson and five step-children were added to his family: Roy (Margie) Henderson, Sandy (Pat) McCraney, Joyce (Mike) Bradford, Donnie Henderson and David Henderson. To this marriage three children: Troy, Shawn and Charon were added to the growing family. The Canfields moved from California to Holdredge, Nebraska, in 1979 where Jim worked for Nelson Furniture Company. Alta died in 1983.
Jim was reborn into the family of God in 1987 in the Assembly of God church in Holdredge. From that time on, the Lord, church, Bible study and prayer were an important part of his life. He felt the commandments were very important and loved to visit with people about them. Jim also believed that one-tenth of what he had was already the Lord's and he had not given to the Lord unless he gave more. He gave to many missions and ministries.
Jim was driving a Sunday school bus, taking people to church from a handicapped center, and playing softball for the church team when he met Jean Walker Tate. They were married in 1988. This added to the growing family two more step-sons: Ronny (Kim) Tate and Danny (Emilia) Tate. Jean was teaching Burlington, Colorado. When the Nelson Company closed, Jim followed Jean to Colorado. He worked driving a school bus, at Safeway and Alco while in Burlington.
Jim and Jean moved to Rocky Ford in 1990. Jean taught at Crowley County School while Jim worked for DeBourgh Manufacturing Company in LaJunta making steel lockers. They later moved to Cheraw. Living next to the lake helped them become bird watchers. Jim retired from DeBourgh in November 2006 and he and Jean moved to Walsh in order to be closer to Jean's aging mother and step-father. When Dollie and Wayne no longer needed them, the couple moved to Lamar in order to be closer to the youngest grandchildren still in high school. It was a great time watching them letter in football, play basketball and baseball and serving them lunch during their 30 minute lunch break.
On June 1st, after returning from Greeley's state baseball tournament, Jim had a heart attack, was flown to Denver and suffered a massive stroke on June 2nd of which he never recovered. His moving to heaven on Thursday, June 9, 2011 has left a vacant
place for: Troy from Ashland, Oregon, Shawn from Denver, and Charon from Garden City, Kansas; granddaughter, Megan and husband, Darren; great-grandchildren, Devon and Breanna from Max, South Dakota; step-grandchildren, Garrett (Amanda) Tate of Windsor, Kyle Tate of Walsh, Ginger Tate of Springfield, Chrislyn Tate of Pueblo, Jamin and Isaac Tate both of Lamar; five step-children Roy and Margie, Sandy and Pat, Joyce and Mile, Donnie, David and families in California as well as many neighbors and friends.
Jim will be sorely missed but never forgotten.
