The crew landed in a snowed covered field in Yugoslavia. They were rescued by the Cvijanovic Family who kept them safe from the enemy for seventy days. The crew was reunited with the Air Force in Italy. For his heroic service, James was awarded many medals and honors.
James met Mary May Mackey while she was teaching school in Lycan, CO. She had grown up in Baca County graduating from Two Buttes High School and a business college in Denver, CO.
