Obituary

Jimmy Danzel Mort was born on November 7, 1943 in Springfield, Colorado. He passed away August 18, 2020 at his home surrounded by loved ones.

Jimmy grew up in the Springfield and Kim communities. He attended Kim High School and graduated.

Shortly after graduation he enlisted in the United States Marine Corp where he served as a helicopter mechanic. He was honorably discharged in November of 1965.

One special day in 1968 Jimmy met Bonnie Phelan at the home of his mother. It became the luckiest day of his life when that meeting led to their marriage on July 7, 1970.

The next years were filled with hard work and raising their three sons; Jay Don, Jeff and Joe.

Jim was well acquainted with hard work and wasn't hesitant to try anything. A few of the ways he provided for his family was driving a semi hauling everything from flowers to cattle, building fence all over the state of Colorado, being a custodian at Vilas School, carpentry, raising race horses, goats, chickens and quail, carrying mail and working with his sons harvesting wheat and corn. All his work experience culminated in him single-handedly building his family's beautiful home from the ground up.

Jim was devoted to and greatly enjoyed his weekly poker games. He made many lasting friendships among his poker buddies.

Jim loved his family and took immense pride and pleasure watching his grandchildren grow. The love he was shown by family and friends gave him strength as he fought his battle with cancer.

Jimmy would like you to know that his work here is done. He received a call, an offer he couldn't refuse for an appointment from which he will not be returning. He wants you to know, however, this offer comes with a huge signing bonus; a reunion with family and friends he has not seen in a long time.

Jim is survived by his wife of 50 years, Bonnie; sons, Jay Don (Bronwyn) Mort of Charleston, South Carolina, Jeffery Darrell (Andrea) Mort of Springfield and Joseph Daniel (Aviana) Mort of Springfield; two sisters, LaVone (Jerry) Smith of Philadelphia, Mississippi and Cora Lee Cumbie of Cartwright, Oklahoma; three brothers, Ralph Mort, Laddie Cumbie and Banie Cumbie all of Las Animas, Colorado; ten grandchildren, Dakota, Amelia, Gunnar, Jaylee, Deaven, Eliana, Kambry, Lakelynn, Braeley and Maryn.

He is preceded in death by his father, Darrell Mort; mother, France Bell; brothers, Carl Alvin Mort and Joseph Cumbie; sister, Arlene Vasquez and nephews, Corby Joe Carter and Aaron Cumbie.

Special thanks to middle son Jeff and his wife, Andrea who provided invaluable care during the last weeks of his life and to all the health care professionals, family and friends who comforted and cared for him. He will always be loved and missed.
