IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Joy Fern
Bryan
December 21, 1924 – April 27, 2020
Joy Fern (Davolt) Bryan was born on December 21, 1924 to John and Mary Davolt in rural Baca County and departed this life on April 27, 2020 at 95 years of age. She married Harvey C. Bohl on October 25, 1938 in Garden City, Kansas. To this marriage was born three children, Loretta June, Joyce Ann and Harold Lynn.
As a young girl Joy attended school at Pretty Prairie School south of Walsh. She always talked about her love for horses and the chores done to help run the home. She attended Lamar Community College and took sewing courses. Joy and Harvey were married until Harvey's death from a farm accident in 1972. Joy loved to sew and crochet. She took a lot of pride in decorated cakes and made more wedding and birthday cakes than she could count. Joy spent a lot of her time painting ceramics and with Tri-Chem. They lived east of Walsh and raised broom corn, milo, wheat and a barnyard full of animals. She also had many beloved dogs over the years. She told many stories about cooking for broomcorn hands. When Joy turned twenty-one, she was old enough to vote and decided that she didn't need to be any older. She celebrated numerous twenty-first birthdays, until she turned ninety. She had such a great time at her ninetieth birthday party she decided she would stay ninety. She always dressed to the nines, having her hair, make-up, jewelry and nails done, even if she never left the house.
She was known around Walsh as the Avon lady as she sold Avon for forty-four years. Joy earned numerous Presidential Awards for her sales over the years. She loved to cook and try new recipes. She married Roscoe V. Bryan in December 1978. Joy and Roscoe loved to travel with their friends to go dancing on Saturday nights in Springfield, Johnson, Syracuse, Ulysses, Lamar, La Junta and even as far as Truth or Consequences, New Mexico. She loved to garden and always loved bringing in fresh cut flowers to decorate her home. She was a proud Baca County resident until she moved to Lamar in 1990. She was always very active in the church both in Walsh and Lamar. Joy was insistent that the family always get together for Christmas, even when that meant we all could not get together until February. The grandkids would love to take turns spending weeks with their Grandmother during summer. The Great-Grandkids also loved to come visit her and to learn about her years of growing up. She had many conversations with them to help with their studies of the Great Depression and times of war. It was during one of the many conversations that Grandmother was informed that she was older than sliced bread. At first, she was not sure about that idea but soon came to realize that she had lived through so many advancements and changes that helped mold the world we know today.
She is preceded in death by her parents (Mary and John), sisters, (Edith May and Emma Jane), her husbands Harvey and Roscoe, her daughter Loretta Dunnam, and grandson Curtis Dunnam. She is survived by her daughter Joyce Ann of Lindsborg, Kansas, son Harold (Elaine) of Lamar, son-in-law Larry Dunnam of Canadian, Texas, fifteen grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
