Obituary

Laurence Dow Chick born October 15, 1921, went to be with the Lord on April 26, 2011.

He was the second son born to Dow and Fern Chick. He was born on the family ranch in Baca County, seven miles east of Campo, Colorado.

He was preceded in death by parents, Dow and Fern Chick; grandparents, John and Nellie Messer; sister, Elma Aliene (Chick) Morrison; and brother, Dan Chick.

Laurence is survived by his wife, Etta May Chick; brothers, Claud Cowan (Belva) Chick of Elkhart, Kansas, Iliff Boyd (Winona) Chick of Campo; nieces and nephews and their families, Trull (Vicki) Chick, Valerie (Darrell) Smith, and Bobby Morrison; cousins, Tom Litke and family and Ray Litke and family. He is also survived by a host of friends who will miss him very much.

Laurence went to Prairie Del country school and Vilas High School. He attended Panhandle State College in Goodwell, Oklahoma.

He later met and married the love of his life, Etta May Isom in April 1946. They celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary in April of 2011.

Laurence farmed and ranched for over 70 years and was often seen in the early days on his favorite horse, "Trix". He was an outdoorsman excelling in hunting and fishing and he enjoyed sports.

Laurence received the Lord Jesus July 31, 1957, as he worked in the field. He was always grateful for the witnesses and prayers of his wife, Etta May and Rev. Charlie Yates. He was baptized November 10, 1957, joined the Baptist church in Campo and later the First Baptist Church in Springfield.

As a deacon, his strong and gentle character inspired and influenced many of the community. He is also remembered for his sense of humor and willingness to help anyone in need. He was a faithful and loving husband setting an example for us all.

He credited the Lord for changing his life for the better and his greatest desire was for all his friends and family to also come to know the Lord. He especially appreciated these verses: "All that the Father gives Me will come to Me, and the one who comes to Me I will by no means cast out" (John 6:37). "And this is the will of Him who sent me, that everyone who sees the Son and believes in Him may have everlasting life; and I will raise him up at the last day" (John 6:40). "No one can come to Me unless the Father who sent Me draws him; and I will raise him up at the last day" (John 6:44). "Most assuredly, I say to you, he who believes in Me has everlasting life" (John 6:47).

Other favorite Bible verses are found in John 8:31-36, "Then Jesus said to those Jews who believed Him, "If you abide in My word, you are My disciples indeed. And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free." They answered Him, "We are Abraham's descendents, and have never been in bondage to anyone. How can You say, 'You will be made free'?" Jesus answered them, "Most assuredly, I say to you, whoever commits sin is a slave of sin. And a slave does not abide in the house forever, but a son abides forever. Therefore if the Son makes you free, you shall be free indeed."

"My sheep hear My voice, and I know them, and they follow me. And I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish; neither shall anyone snatch them out of My hand. My Father, who has given them to me, is greater than all; and no one is able to snatch them out of My Father's hand. I and My Father are one" (John 10:27-30).

"Blessed are the dead who die in the Lord from now on." "Yes," says the Spirit, "that they may rest from their labors, and their works follow them" (Revelation 14:13b).
