IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Lois
Godfrey
December 7, 1922 – August 21, 2018
Stella Lois (Dunlap) Godfrey, known almost everywhere as "Lois," was born December 7, 1922 in Baca County, Colorado to Jesse "Jess" Lawrence Dunlap and Esther Irene (Caldwell) Dunlap. Lois was called by her creator to come home on August 21, 2018 at the age of 95.
Lois lived most all of her life in Walsh until she relocated to Thornton, Colorado in 2012. She attended 12 years of school in the Walsh School District and was the salutatorian of her graduating class in 1940. She attended college at Panhandle State College in Goodwell, Oklahoma for one and one-half years.
Lois married Clarence "Pat" Godfrey, her high school sweetheart, August 18, 1942. Pat and Lois were married for 68 years until Pat went to be with his heavenly father on April 29, 2010. They were blessed with four children: Charles, Larry, Gary and Pamela. Lois was committed to her family, her community and her church. She taught Sunday school, acted as treasurer for the Walsh Methodist Church, helped with the annual church dinner and bazaar, was a member of the women's group, and acted as creator and editor of the "Flame" newsletter. She and Pat worked diligently to obtain county and state funding to construct and support the Walsh Senior Citizen Building. She loved family dinners, kid's athletic events, and dance recitals. Pat and Lois owned and operated the Walsh Variety Store from 1957 thru 1959. Lois became "collector of utilities" in 1963, the Walsh town clerk in 1970, and the elementary school librarian in 1976.
She was also a very talented artist. Her first grade teacher encouraged her to compete in a county art contest where she won first place. Years later she told us that she drew a small puppy sitting beside a dog house. She said, "I don't know how I won first place, my dog wasn't very good, and I still can't draw a dog very good." She did not hesitate to share her artistic abilities. She held china painting classes in her home to help others enjoy and develop their abilities. Among her other talents were sewing, embroidery, Brazilian embroidery, quilting, drawing, oil painting (she even painted an eagle on the WHS base drum!), Tri-Chem painting, leather tooling, and ceramics. She also helped wall paper her home, as well as, many of her friend's and children's homes. Creating a complete list of all that she was able to do is impossible. She also enjoyed her yard and gardening. She had so many beautiful flowers, roses were her favorite. She called gardening "therapy." In Gary's opinion, she took sewing to the extreme. She would head to Duckwalls and buy enough material to make three shirts, one for each son. By the time Gary out grew his shirt he would have worn the "same shirt" for three or four years. (His shirt plus two hand me downs.)
She loved football. The Walsh Eagles and Denver Broncos were her favorite teams. If the Broncos were on, she was planted in front of her TV at game time writing notes about each play and each touchdown. She did not miss a game the Eagles played, if at all possible. When she was no longer able to climb the bleachers, she began parking her car on the track so that she could watch the game from the comfort of her vehicle.
Lois was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star, an organization associated with the Masons. The order is based on teachings from the Bible, but is open to people of all faiths. Lois and Pat spent many years in those organizations.
Charles Milton "Charlie," (now "Chuck") was born in 1945. Pat was stationed at Ft. Lewis in the state of Washington and was unable to be present for the birth. Six months later when Pat received transfer orders, Lois and Charles moved across the country to Falmouth, Massachusetts to join Pat at Camp Edwards. The family returned to Walsh in 1947 when Pat began teaching and coaching at Walsh High School. Larry Earl was born in 1947 and a third son, Gary Wayne was born in 1949. To complete the family Pamela Kay "Pam" was born in 1958.
Lois is preceded in death by her parents, Jesse and Esther, her siblings; Clarence Ray, Robert Preston, Raymond V, Clifford Victor, Velma Pearl, and Charles "Delbert" Dunlap; her husband Pat; son Larry; daughter-in-law Deb Godfrey, and grandson Chad Godfrey.
Nine grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren survive her. Chuck and Sheila's children are Charla Johnston, Cheri Steen and Shayna Etl. Gary and Deb's children are Brande Tremblay and Josh Godfrey. Pam and Ron's children are Robert Reeves, Malia Harvey, Kegan Reeves and Carlie Reeves. Her great-grandchildren are Rylee and Hayden Steen, Reece, Jordan and Charlee Etl, Brayden and Mason Godfrey, Kayla and Ashley Tremblay, and Gavin Harvey.
