Pete was born on the family farm in Baca County, Colorado on June 5, 1925, to William Warren Ownbey and Margarette Alma (Geer) Ownbey. He lived most of his life on that same farm, only leaving to serve in the U.S. Marine Corps during World War II when he was stationed in San Diego, California and Honolulu, Hawaii, then in later years, moving into Campo. He attended school at Star and later at Vilas. On August 4, 1952, Pete married Juanita Crissman, bringing her into the family business where he partnered with his brothers William (Bud) and Bower.
Pete is survived by his wife of 65 years, Juanita, of Lamar, Colorado, his children: Kink (Deb) of Springfield, Carol of Lamar,
Debbie (Darrell) Hearne of Graham, Texas, and Allen (Sherrie) of Campo, numerous grandchildren, great grandchildren, cousins, nieces, nephews, in-laws and friends.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Will and Margarette Ownbey, brothers: Bud, Bower, Ivan, Nat, Glen, and Hank, sisters: Blanche, Leatha, Norma, Jane, and Pauline.
Pete loved life and lived it with gusto, and believed family, friends, horses, and sports were essential to a happy life. He enjoyed teaching his kids and grandkids how much fun you can have on a horse or being pulled along behind in a wagon. To take in a kids' ballgame was one of his favorite ways to round out a good day. Many of his friends and family looked forward to birthdays just to hear him sing the birthday song in his own "unique" way.
