Matle Audrey (Adams) Shepherd
1918 – 2014
Matle Audrey Shepherd entered this life on July 8, 1918 and skipped and singing with joy into Jesus's arms January 24, 2014. Matle was the first born to William and Alice Adams. She was born in Flores, OK. This young family moved, by covered wagon to homestead in the Big Rock area northwest of Springfield, when Matle was a baby.
She attended a country school not far from their home. Then attended and graduated from Pritchett High school.
While working for Frank & Neva Wilson cooking for harvest hands, Matle met and fell in love with Clarence Shepherd. They married on December 19, 1941. They had four children that were born, Bonnie, Billy, Betty, and Bennie.
Matle worked at various jobs until she went to work at Southeast Colorado Hospital as their dietitian. She worked there until she retired in 1992.
Matle never stopped moving. She was an active member of Springfield Assembly of God church, she was part of many women groups (WM, Quilting Group, and Prayer Chain). She was also involved in her community as a member of the Historical Society and volunteered one day a week at the museum. She was also a part of the traveling kitchen band.
She loved to quilt, work puzzles, gardening, and spend time with family and friends. Matle loved to bake and she was known her sticky cinnamon buns, her brownies, and her hot dinner rolls. She always helped the needy. She always said, "It's a privilege to serve God and no place to stop praying."
Matle was proceeded in death by her husband; Clarence Shepherd, son; Bennie Shepherd, parents, William and Alice Adams, her sister; Sarah McKinley, and two brothers; Jesse Calvin and Howard Adams.
Matle is survived by her children; Bonnie Bennett, Billy (Vyann) Shepherd, and Betty (Gary) Mangel and 8 grandchildren and their spouses, 18 great grandchildren and 10 great great grandchildren and her nieces and nephews and a host of friends.
