Richard Eugene Smith went home to be with the Lord in Walsh, Colorado, on Tuesday, August 25, 2015. Richard was born October 3, 1932, in San Diego, California, to Louis Aubrey and Hazel May (Moore) Smith. He was the youngest of seven children. Richard was united in marriage to Ethelyn Armenda Broyles, known to most as Lynn, on February 15, 1957, in San Diego.
Working in road construction for many years, Richard belonged to the Operating Engineers', Local 12 in San Diego from 1960 until his retirement in 1989.
He was very involved in the lives of his children. He helped in many ways with Cindy's softball league. He loved helping with Mike's Pop Warner football teams, with Don's baseball teams and with Indian Scouts for Nelson. He held positions such as Umpire in Chief, equipment manager and filmed every football game.
Upon retirement, Lynn and Richard moved to Walsh, Colorado, to enjoy a slower paced life away from the city. Richard was a member of the Walsh United Methodist Church, the Walsh Arts Council and served as a board member of Holt Manors. He also was park keeper for the City of Walsh.
Early in life Richard was afflicted with polio. This caused many surgeries on his foot and ankle throughout his life. He never let this handicap interfere with his ability to provide for his family.
He also experienced heart attacks, broken bones, lung cancer, leg amputation, lung resection and more, but he was never without a smile and a cheerful attitude. He was always thankful to have another day to be alive. Richard loved to help others and serve the Lord.
Richard is survived by his wife, Ethelyn, of the home in Walsh; his children, Don (Pat) of Springfield, CO, Nelson of Walsh, Mike (Lila) of Bonita, CA, and Cindy (Alan) Packard of Walsh. He is also survived by 11 grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren, and I great, great-grandchild. Numerous nieces, nephews and friends also survive.
Richard is preceded in death by his parents; his brothers, Aubrey, Webster, James and Allen; his sisters, Margie Denham ad Jean Fowler and by one granddaughter, Cori.
If there is a word that best describes Richard it would be integrity. He strove for commitment, quality and honesty with all equal integrity!
Contributions in memory of Richard may be sent to the Walsh United Methodist Church.
