Obituary

Roland Higgins, age 88, died July 10, 2010, at the Walsh Healthcare Center in Walsh, Colorado. Rod was born April 16, 1922, to John and Cora Higgins in Green City, Missouri.

Rod, as a child of four, moved with his parents to Walsh, Colorado, where he lived for the rest of his life with the exception of four years of military service. Rod loved Baca County and its people.

He married Mary Gunkel in 1950 and together they had three children: Ed, Ronnie, and Sueann. That union was broken, and in July of 1973, Rod married Jean Walters.

Rod served four years of active military service and had sixty-three active years of service to the American Legion. He enjoyed and took seriously all of his responsibilities of service there.

He held the position of trustee for the town of Walsh, and he also served as Fire Chief for the Walsh Volunteer Fire Department for seventeen years. Rod worked in his auto shop in Walsh for the majority of his life.

Rod loved to hunt, fish and bowl. He sponsored a State Bowling Team for thirty-nine years, and has many trophies to show for it.

Family meant the world to Rod and he loved all of them. They all have so many memories of the great times they shared together.

Those who preceded him in death were his parents, a son, a stepson, seven brothers, two sisters, and his beloved wife, Jean Higgins.

Surviving to mourn his passing and to cherish his memory are: son, Ed Gunkel and family of Nogal, New Mexico, daughter, Sueann Martin and family of Las Vegas, Nevada, stepdaughter, Edye Grice and family of Amarillo, Texas, brother Daymond of Walsh, Colorado, sister, Norma Jean Bennett and family of Denver, Colorado, eleven wonderful grandchildren, many great-grandchildren and great-great grands, his many family members, and a host of friends.
