Obituary

Veta Fay Lock was born October 21, 1931, in Pritchett, Colorado, to Elden and Fay Konkel and departed this life on March 21, 2011, at the age of 79 years.

Veta Fay was raised on the Thompson ranch south of Vilas until 1941, when Elden and Fay purchased their family farm 10 miles south of Vilas.

She attended school in Vilas, Colorado, and was taught, as many other family members, by her Aunt Lena Edwards.

It was during her youth that she met the love of her life, Don Lock, and after dating for two years, Don and Veta were united in marriage on October 3, 1948. Don and Veta decided to make their home in Baca County near their families and began farming. To this union three children were born: Jennifer Gail, Shelley Renee and Royce Earl. Veta was happy being a homemaker and raising her children as well as working tirelessly to help run meals to the fields and cooking to feed 30-40 men three meals a day during the broomcorn harvest. Years later, she became very active in the American Agriculture Movement where she volunteered her time to help the plight of the American farmer.

As the years passed, the family grew and Veta lovingly welcomed the addition of her eight grandchildren. She loved hosting family gatherings and they always centered around home cooked meals, music and lots of laughter.

Veta's love of music was a gift to everyone around her. Many a morning we may hear her sweet voice singing a popular tune or whistling away as she did her busy work. She loved to sit at her piano and play while waiting for the family to gather for the evening meal.

In 1954, Don and Veta made the choice to accept the Lord into their lives. The meaning of the Lord's truth changed her life and they raised their children accordingly. Her love of God and His word guided and comforted her through her final days until He called her home.

Veta is preceded in death by her parents, Elden and Fay Konkel; sister, Rita Ray Konkel and two brothers, Keith Konkel and Earl Konkel.

She is survived by her husband, Don Lock; her daughters Jennifer and husband, Sam Woods of Reno NV and Shelley and husband, Neal Winberg of Omaha, NE; son Royce Lock of Campo, CO; eight grandchildren: Alissa and Alanna Woods of Reno, NV, Shane and wife Sarah Winberg of Belle Chase, LA, Natasha Winberg and her husband Duane of Loveland, CO, Branda and Savannah Lock of Perryhall, MD, Tommy Dettling of Morgantown, West VA, Shalah Lock of Forresthill, MD. She is also survived by a brother Melvin and wife, Kay Konkel of Vilas; a sister, Virginia and husband Rolla Ellsworth of Boise City, OK; and a sister-in-law, Joyce Konkel of Aztec, NM, in addition to many nieces, nephews and friends.

Veta, true to her name "meaning of live"…lived hers to the fullest. Throughout life's journey and struggles she was the embodiment of strength. She made living through the toughest times seem effortless. She was a vibrant woman full of joy, who always had a smile or laughter to share. She will be remembered by her family and friends as a gracious, happy and loving person. She was a ray of sunshine and will continue to shine down upon us always.
