Westley Hereward Duncan 78, of Springfield passed away Saturday morning, September 19, 2015, at the Long Term Care Unit of the Stanton County Hospital in Johnson City, Kansas.
He was born December 30, 1936 in Lamar, Colorado. He was one of nine children born to Cecil A. and Pauline (Guder) Duncan. Wes grew up in Lamar, and attended the public schools there. He spent summers in Stockton, Kansas working in the wheat fields for his uncle George. He worked as an automobile mechanic for Kelly Hayes, Carl Stumble and Labertew Pontiac in Lamar, Colorado and Westward Pontiac in Phoenix, Arizona. He returned to Lamar and later married Janice Holt on August 2, 1971 in Clayton, New Mexico. They made their home in Springfield, and he went to work for Key Chevrolet. Later, he started his own automobile repair shop in Springfield.
He is survived by his wife Janice, children Sharon (Hardin) Helmer and Dennis Hardin, sister Lilly McCall, two grandchildren, one great granddaughter, numerous nephews, nieces, cousins, a brother-in-law, a sister-in-law and many friends.
Wes was preceded in death by his parents; sisters Melva Duncan, JoAnn Lapp, Bonny Williams and Justina Warman; and brothers Lloyd, Wayland and Lee Duncan.
Cremation has taken place, and his ashes will be placed at the Walsh Cemetery. A memorial is planned at a later time.
