IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Winona
Chick
November 3, 1924 – October 23, 2018
Edith Winona Acre was born to James S. and Edith (Downs) Acre on November 3, 1924, at the family home in Richards, Colorado. She was the fifth child of seven born to Jim and Edith.
Winona and her siblings grew up together in a loving and hardworking household. Shortly before her 10 th birthday, in 1934, the last child, Nellie, was born. Winona had to assume a great deal of responsibility helping care for her new born baby sister as well as doing household chores while Edith recovered. This responsibility at such a young age instilled in Winona a tremendous work ethic.
Winona attended school at Richards until her senior year. She moved in with her brother, Tex, and his wife, Marguerite, and enrolled in Springfield High School. Winona didn't graduate choosing instead to marry Iliff Boyd Chick, 'Ike', on December 24, 1942, in Boise City, Oklahoma, and begin life on the farm. Aside from working on their farm she worked many long days cooking and cleaning for broom corn hands during the harvest season. She and Ike raised many chickens and would milk the cows, separate the cream and put it on the train to be sold. They would use the proceeds from the cream to buy their groceries. She would also raise large gardens.
Winona was the quintessential farm wife. She took pride in being a helpmeet to Ike. When Boyd Iliff Chick was born on September 4, 1959, the family was complete. Time off from work was spent camping and hunting in the Colorado Mountains and fishing in Texas. Winona and Ike both loved to bowl and were on a bowling league in Springfield each week for several years.
Winona's life was even more blessed when she became Granny to Matthew born on October 25, 1984, and Timothy born on August 24, 1989. She always had love and time to give to grandsons, nieces, nephews, great- nieces and great-nephews. She was loved in return. "Just when a grandma thinks her work is finished someone calls her great". She became 'great' to Cayson Boyd Chick on June 6, 2012.
She loved to cook and teach her grandsons to cook. She always joked about being a short order cook when they would stay the night. She would cook whatever it was they wanted for breakfast each morning.
Winona passed away October 23, 2018, at Southeast Colorado Hospital District LTC in Springfield, Colorado. She was 93. She is survived by her grandsons, Matt Chick and fiancée Randi Batterton of Campo, Colorado, and Tim Chick also of Campo, great-grandsons Cayson Chick, Treven Batterton and Colby Batterton; sisters-in-law, Marguerite Acre of Henderson, Nevada, Irena Acre of Greensburg, Kansas, Lela Acre of Walsh, Colorado, and Belva Chick of Elkhart, Kansas.
